A dogleg par 4 with a false front green that is among the most sneaky holes at Bandon Dunes. The tee shot bends left around a natural dune feature, and the landing zone is broad enough for most players. The real drama unfolds on the approach — the false front green is unforgiving to anything that lands even a yard short, and the angle of the approach from the fairway means the left bunker is directly in your eyeline.

Shot-by-Shot Strategy

T

Tee Shot

Play the tee shot to the right side of the fairway, which opens up the best angle to the green around the dogleg. Cutting the corner is possible for long hitters who can carry 260 yards, but the rough on the inside of the dogleg is thick and the reward is marginal. A 3-wood or fairway metal down the right side of the fairway is an ideal play for mid-handicappers, setting up a comfortable mid-iron approach.

A

Approach

The false front green is the defining challenge. Aim for the middle or back of the green — never try to land the ball on the front. A shot that lands on the false front will roll back 15-20 yards into the fairway, leaving a difficult chip to a tight green. From the right side of the fairway, the left bunker disappears from your sightline; from the left side, it looms large. Play to the center and take enough club to carry the ball past the front half.

P

Putting

The green slopes from back to front, compounding the false-front effect. Long putts from the back are fast and require a delicate touch — leaving them short in the center area means the ball will roll toward the front and possibly off the putting surface. Never leave yourself above the hole on this green; always putt up the slope from below the cup.

Gotchas — What Kills Your Score

  • The false front is the most severe on the course — even a slightly short approach rolls all the way back to the fairway.
  • Players who escape the false front still face a long uphill putt from the front of the green that is easy to overrun.
  • The approach angle from the left side of the fairway puts the left bunker directly in front of the flag — a visual trap that pulls many shots into the sand.
  • In a tailwind, approach shots fly further than expected and can run through the green entirely.

Wind Intelligence

The southwest wind on this hole is generally from the right or slightly behind. A tailwind makes the false front even more dangerous as the ball carries further and lands with less backspin. Into a left-to-right wind, players must aim further left to account for drift but risk getting closer to the left bunker. The safest play in any wind is to take one club more than needed and aim for the back half of the green.

Hazard Map

  • Severe false front that returns short approach shots to the fairway
  • Left bunker visible from the approach on the left side of the fairway
  • Native rough on the inside of the dogleg corner
  • Steep back-to-front slope that creates fast downhill putts
