The hardest hole on the back nine and second hardest on the course. A long par 4 that plays into the prevailing headwind on a fully exposed heathland ridge, the 11th demands a perfect drive and a long iron approach to a green that is one of the most difficult to hold at Bandon Trails. Bogey is an honest score; par is a win.
Shot-by-Shot Strategy
Tee Shot
Driver into the teeth of the southwest wind. The fairway is relatively generous but the headwind makes this feel like a 520-yard hole on a typical Bandon day. Aim left-center and accept a shorter-than-usual distance — the wind is the primary factor, not your swing speed. Getting the ball in the fairway is the only goal from this tee.
Approach
Long iron or hybrid approach from 200+ yards in a headwind. The green is well-bunkered and plays firm in the exposed conditions. The only acceptable miss is short-left — bunkers right and through-the-back are far more punishing. Take enough club to reach the front of the green and let the ball run to the pin.
Putting
The green tilts toward the prevailing wind — from left to right on most portions. From the left side, putts break right more than they read. From above the hole, pace is dramatically quick in the exposed conditions. A safe two-putt bogey finish here is a small victory.
⚠Gotchas — What Kills Your Score
- •The length plus headwind makes this hole play at least 520 yards effective — adjust expectations from the start.
- •Going for a heroic second shot from a compromised position almost always makes the score worse. Take your medicine and chip out if needed.
- •The bunkers right of the green are deep and have steep faces — recovery from there virtually guarantees double bogey.
Wind Intelligence
The defining wind hole at Bandon Trails. The prevailing southwest headwind is at maximum strength on this exposed ridge, and with 465 yards already to cover, the effective playing distance is extreme. In the strongest conditions, this hole has played over 550 yards effectively. This is where the course's 74.9 rating comes from. Respect it.
