A long par 5 on the exposed heathland ridge with full crosswind exposure from the southwest. The routing turns slightly to offer a different wind angle than holes 10 and 11, making this a genuine two-shot opportunity for longer hitters in a favorable wind. In a headwind, the three-shot strategy is the only safe play.

Shot-by-Shot Strategy

T

Tee Shot

Driver aiming left-center to account for the southwest crosswind pushing the ball right. The fairway is the widest on the heathland section — a generous target, but the fescue rough beyond both edges is exceptionally deep. Getting the ball in the fairway is worth sacrificing distance.

A

Approach

The second-shot decision depends entirely on wind direction and first-shot position. In a crosswind or slight tailwind from a fairway position, a long iron or hybrid toward the layup zone at 100 yards is the right call. In a significant headwind, lay up to 120 yards and take a comfortable full wedge approach. The green is large and receptive from 100 yards.

P

Putting

The large heathland green has two distinct tiers. A front-tier pin approached from the back tier leaves a very fast, breaking downhill putt. Know your tier and aim to be on the same level as the pin. Lag putting is the priority here — getting close is more important than being below the hole.

Gotchas — What Kills Your Score

  • The crosswind on the approach moves the ball significantly — a 20 mph southwest crosswind can move a long iron 20 yards right. Adjust your aim line accordingly.
  • The two-tier green catches players who don't confirm pin position — a back pin approached to the front tier means a very long first putt.
  • Going for it in two from the rough into a crosswind with bunkers flanking the green is a high-risk play that rarely pays off.

Wind Intelligence

Running northwest on the heathland, hole 12 plays in a classic southwest crosswind that pushes the ball right throughout. The crosswind effect on long shots is severe — a driver in a 20 mph crosswind can drift 30 yards right if not compensated. The approach also plays in a crosswind, requiring aggressive left aim on any shot toward the right half of the green.
