The dramatic finishing hole at Bandon Trails is a long par 4 that plays from the dune section back toward the clubhouse. The final hole demands everything — a long, accurate drive and a precise approach to a green framed by natural dune features with the Bandon Trails clubhouse visible behind. A worthy conclusion to the resort's most challenging course.

Shot-by-Shot Strategy

T

Tee Shot

Driver is required to set up a manageable approach. Aim at the left-center of the fairway — the prevailing wind is typically a left-to-right crosswind that will move the ball right. A 260-yard drive leaves a mid-iron approach. Anything right of the fairway center finds the most difficult rough on the finishing hole.

A

Approach

Mid-iron into the closing green. The green is framed by natural dune ridges on both sides, making the left and right misses equally difficult. Aim at the center of the putting surface and commit fully. The clubhouse gallery will be watching — make a solid contact, not a hero shot.

P

Putting

The finishing green has the most pronounced slope on the back nine — front-to-back with a lean left. From the back-right quadrant, putts are the fastest on the course. From below the hole on the left side, putts are manageable and makeable. Leave the ball below the hole if at all possible.

Gotchas — What Kills Your Score

  • The closing dune ridges on both sides compress the visual, making the green look narrower and the approach feel tighter than it actually is.
  • The right rough on the approach is the most punishing of any finishing hole at Bandon — dune vegetation and sandy lies make recovery very difficult.
  • The gallery watching from the clubhouse terrace amplifies pressure on the approach. Take an extra breath, commit to center, and trust your swing.

Wind Intelligence

The finishing hole plays into a quartering headwind from the southwest on most days — the prevailing wind combines with the uphill aspect of the approach to make the hole play significantly longer than the card. After a full day of wind adjustments, this is the final test. Take one to two extra clubs and swing within yourself for the cleanest possible finish.

Hazard Map

  • Dune rough both sides — most penalizing on the finishing hole
  • Dune ridges framing approach from both sides
  • Pronounced putting slope — fastest area on the back nine
