The transitional hole between the dense forest and the open heathland. As you play hole 7, the trees begin to thin noticeably on the left side, and the first hints of open sky and coastal wind begin to appear. It's a reminder that the nature of the course is about to change dramatically — and so must your strategy.
Shot-by-Shot Strategy
Tee Shot
Driver or three-wood to the center of the fairway. The opening to the left provides some breathing room, but trees still line the right side tightly. Aim center and avoid overcorrecting left just because the forest is opening up — the fescue rough left of the thinning tree line is equally penalizing.
Approach
Mid-iron into a transitional green that sits on the edge of the forest-heathland boundary. A bunker right of the green is the primary obstacle; the left side has rough but more recovery options. The green is receptive from the front, making a bump-and-run from just off the left edge viable in firmer conditions.
Putting
The green is well-designed with subtle undulations. The transition zone means this green drains differently than the deeper forest holes — it's firmer and faster. Adjust pace expectations upward compared to holes 1–6.
⚠Gotchas — What Kills Your Score
- •The opening sky on the left can subconsciously alter your alignment — check your feet and shoulders before pulling the trigger.
- •The bunker right of the green is larger than it appears from the fairway. Anything pushed or faded catches it easily.
- •The pace change on this green surprises most players. After slower forest greens, this one runs more true and faster.
Wind Intelligence
The thinning forest on hole 7 begins to admit coastal wind for the first time on the outward nine. The prevailing southwest wind arrives as a quartering left-to-right on the approach — adjust club selection and aim point slightly left of target to account for the drift. Wind will strengthen significantly over holes 8 and 9 as the forest disappears.
