The downhill finishing hole at Old Macdonald sweeps from an elevated tee back toward the clubhouse, offering one of the most scenic finales at the resort. The natural downhill topography gives the tee shot extra distance, and the approach plays to a green visible from the clubhouse patio. A worthy golden-age finish.

Shot-by-Shot Strategy

T

Tee Shot

Driver from the elevated tee — the downhill slope gives extra carry and run, so take one less club if your typical driver distance threatens to run through the landing zone. Aim at the center of the wide fairway and enjoy the downhill view. The wide fairway here is forgiving; the main risk is running through into the fescue beyond.

A

Approach

Short to mid-iron into the closing green. The gallery view from the clubhouse patio adds the same pressure as any finishing hole at the resort. Aim at the center of the green — the finishing hole green is the most generous target of the back nine. Make a confident, committed swing and accept the result.

P

Putting

The finishing green slopes from back to front, consistent with the downhill character of the hole. From the back portion, pace is the fastest of the closing stretch — don't ram an above-hole putt. A two-putt finish on 18 at Old Macdonald is a quality result after a demanding round on the course's longest layout.

Gotchas — What Kills Your Score

  • The downhill tee shot carries further than the flat-ground equivalent — driver can run through the ideal landing zone into difficult fescue. Be aware of your carry distance from elevation.
  • The approach appears shorter than the yardage because of the downhill view — resist the urge to under-club.
  • The clubhouse gallery view from the patio makes the finishing approach feel more pressured. Take an extra moment to breathe, pick your line, and commit to a confident swing.

Wind Intelligence

Running back toward the clubhouse to the northeast, the 18th typically plays in a tailwind from the southwest on most Bandon days. After a round of battling headwinds, the tailwind on the finishing hole is a welcome gift. In a tailwind, driver runs further down the slope — know your carry distance and protect against running through the fairway.
