After the brutality of hole 3, hole 4 offers a slight reprieve — a wide fairway that gives players room to breathe off the tee. The trap here is the approach: the green is surrounded by some of the most precisely placed bunkering on the course, and a wide fairway tee shot that ends in the wrong position leaves a very difficult angle to the flag. Smart course management is rewarded on this hole.

Shot-by-Shot Strategy

T

Tee Shot

The wide fairway invites an aggressive driver off the tee, but position matters more than distance. Aim for the right-center of the fairway to open up the widest approach angle to the green. Drives that end up on the left side of the fairway face a much tighter entrance to the green, with a bunker that comes into play from that angle. The rough on both sides is thick but not unplayable — getting into it costs distance, not a penalty stroke.

A

Approach

The approach from the right-center of the fairway is a mid to short iron with a clear view of the entire green. The bunkers guard the left and right front of the green — the safe landing zone is the center. In a crosswind, the left bunker becomes particularly dangerous as the wind pushes approach shots toward it. Never aim at a left-hand pin without taking the bunker out of your mental picture.

P

Putting

The green has a gentle front-to-back slope in the center and more pronounced side-to-side movement on the wings. Putts from the left side of the green tend to break right toward the center; putts from the right break left. The center of the green is the most consistent putting surface — aim approach shots there for the best putting angles.

Gotchas — What Kills Your Score

  • The wide fairway creates overconfidence — the approach angle from the left side is significantly harder than from the right.
  • The left front bunker is deeper than it appears and is positioned directly in the flight path from the left fairway.
  • Wind pushes approach shots toward the left bunker on most days — aim right of your target.
  • The gentle slope of the green can create deceptively fast downhill putts when the pin is at the back.

Wind Intelligence

The southwest wind on this hole is typically a left-to-right crosswind, which pushes approach shots toward the left-side bunkers. Pre-compensate by aiming further right than feels comfortable. In strong wind, a right-to-left draw into the wind is the most reliable approach shape. The tee shot is relatively sheltered by dune ridges, making the wind primarily a factor for the approach.

Hazard Map

  • Left and right front bunkers flanking the green entrance
  • Thick native rough on both sides of the fairway
  • Left-to-right crosswind pushing approaches toward the left bunker
  • Tight approach angle from the left side of the fairway
