An elevated tee par 3 with sweeping ocean views from the highest point on the back nine. The elevation makes the hole visually spectacular and strategically complex — the ball flies further from the elevated tee, the wind is amplified at height, and the view of the Pacific from this position is among the finest at the resort.

Shot-by-Shot Strategy

T

Tee Shot

Club down from the elevation — the elevated tee gives extra carry distance that partially offsets the wind effect. In a headwind, the two effects may nearly cancel out; in a crosswind, the elevation amplifies the drift. Aim at the center of the green and commit to a full swing. The elevated tee narrows the visual target — trust your yardage over your eye.

P

Putting

The elevated back-nine par-3 green has the most ocean-facing lean of any putting surface on the course — all putts break toward the Pacific. First-time visitors are shocked by how much the right side putts break. From the left side, the break is less severe but still notable. Pace is the primary challenge — the firm elevated surface runs very fast.

Gotchas — What Kills Your Score

  • The elevated tee amplifies wind effect — even a 10 mph crosswind at height creates significant drift. Aim further into the wind than on any comparable shot from ground level.
  • The visual distortion from the elevation makes the green look smaller — trust the yardage and don't over-swing trying to reach an apparently distant target.
  • The ocean-facing lean is the steepest of any green at Sheep Ranch — right-side putts from above the hole can run well off the green if pace is not carefully managed.

Wind Intelligence

The highest elevation point on the back nine amplifies every wind effect. The prevailing southwest wind is at maximum strength here — in a strong blow, the crosswind drift can move a mid-iron 25+ feet in either direction. Take your time reading the wind thoroughly from this elevated position. The view is extraordinary; absorb it between shots, then focus completely on the wind adjustment before swinging.
