A wind-exposed ocean par 3 that is one of the most visually striking tee shots at Sheep Ranch. Played from a tee on the promontory edge across open ocean-facing terrain to a green perched against the Pacific backdrop, this hole is as much about managing the elements as it is about striking the ball. In any meaningful wind, club selection here is the most critical decision of the front nine.

Shot-by-Shot Strategy

T

Tee Shot

Commit to a club and a line — indecision here leads to tentative swings that find every bunker and off-green position. In a typical southwest headwind, take two clubs more than the yardage would suggest. Aim at the center of the green and make a full, confident swing. The green is generous enough to accept shots from a wide angle range; land it on the putting surface and accept where it finishes.

P

Putting

The ocean par-3 green is one of the faster putting surfaces on the course — wind affects long putts noticeably here. On the putting green, the ocean-facing lean produces a subtle rightward tilt. First-time visitors are surprised by how much a long putt can drift with the wind across a fast surface. Take your time and read carefully.

Gotchas — What Kills Your Score

  • Wind is the primary variable — in a strong headwind, this 168-yard hole can play 210 yards. Never under-club on a wind-exposed ocean par 3.
  • Short is the worst miss — anything landing short of the green finds sea-grass rough or a steep slope with a very difficult recovery.
  • The visual drama of the Pacific backdrop makes concentration difficult — take a full look, absorb the view, then reset completely before pulling the trigger.

Wind Intelligence

This hole is the most exposed par 3 on the front nine. Playing directly into or across the prevailing southwest wind with no shelter whatsoever, club selection can vary by three clubs depending on conditions. The wind also affects putts on this exposed green more than on any other putting surface — factor in wind drift on long putts. Trust the flags completely.
